Chikou Trend Check

The Chikou Span on its own, with one icon that says whether the trend is confirmed.

⛵

Chikou Trend Check answers one question: has price really moved away from where it was, and in which direction? It draws the Chikou Span from Ichimoku and puts the answer where your eye already is, at the end of the line. It confirms a trend; it doesn’t call entries.

Chikou
01

One line, nothing else

The Chikou Span is the simplest line in Ichimoku and the easiest to misread. It is today’s close, drawn back in time, and its job is confirmation. This tool draws only that line: no cloud, no other lines. Read it alone, or add it to your own Ichimoku.

⛵
02

Has price really moved?

On every bar, the tool sets today’s close against the price the Chikou is plotted against. A move counts as confirmed only when the close has cleared that price. By default the check is strict, so a close that only scrapes past still counts as undecided.

  • Strict on purpose: confirmation should be clear, not borderline

The answer at the end of the line

One icon sits at the Chikou’s latest point. A sailboat when it rides clear above price, a diver when it sinks clear below, and waves while it is still tangled. Hover the icon to see the prices behind the verdict.

Pick your icons

Each state has its own list of icons — rockets, eagles and bulls above; anchors, whales and bears below; clouds, fog and compasses while tangled. You can paste your own emoji or short text, or hide a state completely, for example to see only confirmed moves.

  • Icons are emoji, so they look slightly different on Mac, Windows and mobile

Hosoda’s count, or one for 24/7 markets

The line is counted the way Hosoda counted it, and sits exactly where TradingView’s built-in Ichimoku draws its Chikou. For markets that trade every day, such as crypto, there is a common community setting as well.

Pair it with the full Ichimoku

The check looks at price only. A full Ichimoku reading also asks whether the Chikou is clear of the cloud. For that, and the rest of Hosoda’s method, use Ichimoku Kinko Hyo [Arxon Edge] alongside it.

How to read it

  1. Sailboat: the Chikou rides clear above price — an up move is confirmed.
  2. Diver: the Chikou sinks clear below price — a down move is confirmed.
  3. Waves: still tangled — nothing is confirmed yet, so treat trend reads with more doubt.
  4. Take the read from a closed bar. While a bar is still forming, the icon can change.

Good to know

  • It is late by design. The Chikou looks back, so it confirms a move that has already happened and will always lag a turn.
  • It checks price only, not the cloud. Use Ichimoku Kinko Hyo [Arxon Edge] for the full reading.
  • The strict reading, the tangled state and the icons are this tool’s own choices, not something Hosoda prescribed.
  • It is not a trading system and has not been backtested. Test it on your own market before you trust it.

Questions

Is the sailboat a buy signal?

No. It confirms that price has moved up away from where it was. It doesn’t tell you when to enter; the trade stays yours.

Why did the icon change before the bar closed?

The check runs on the bar that is still forming, so the answer can change until that bar closes. Read it from a closed bar.

Does it work on markets that trade around the clock?

Yes. Besides Hosoda’s classic count there is a setting made for markets that trade every day, such as crypto.

Do I need Ichimoku Kinko Hyo as well?

No, it works on its own. Pair the two if you want the full Ichimoku reading, including the cloud.
